ADHD Hyperactivity-Impulsivity Symptoms
Understanding hyperactive and impulsive behaviors in ADHD
Hyperactivity-impulsivity is one of the two main symptom categories in ADHD. These symptoms involve excessive physical movement, restlessness, and difficulty with impulse control.
Hyperactivity Symptoms
- Fidgeting or tapping hands/feet frequently
- Difficulty remaining seated in situations where it's expected
- Running or climbing at inappropriate times (restlessness in adults)
- Unable to play or engage in activities quietly
- Often "on the go" as if "driven by a motor"
- Excessive talking
Impulsivity Symptoms
- Blurting out answers before questions are completed
- Difficulty waiting turn in conversations or activities
- Often interrupting or intruding on others
- Making hasty decisions without considering consequences
- Acting or speaking without thinking
Age-Related Changes
Hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms often change with age:
- Children may show more obvious physical hyperactivity
- Teens might experience more internal restlessness
- Adults often report feeling driven by an "internal motor"
- Impulsivity may shift from physical actions to decision-making
